🌿The Bonalu festival in Secunderabad is popularly known as Lashkar Bonalu because “Lashkar” was the historical name for Secunderabad Cantonment during the Nizam era. The word “Lashkar” means army or military camp in Persian/Urdu — as Secunderabad was established as a British military base in the 19th century. 🏰🛕 So, when Bonalu is celebrated in Secunderabad, it is fondly called Lashkar Bonalu, tying together the area’s military past and Telangana’s cultural traditions. 🌺🔥 The festival dates back to the 19th century, during a deadly plague outbreak in Hyderabad. Devotees believed that offering prayers and Bonam (a meal offering) to the Goddess would protect from disease.
