Chandravilas, established in 1900 by Chimanlal Hemraj Joshi, began as a humble tea cart on Gandhi Road in Ahmedabad. Over time, it evolved into a full-fledged restaurant, pioneering the concept of the ‘Gujarati Thali’ in the city. This thali, introduced in 1925 and priced at just one rupee, included an array of dishes such as vegetable curries, rotli, bhakhri, paratha, poori, potatoes, lentils, rice, dal, farsan, and sweets. The restaurant’s reputation grew rapidly, attracting not only locals but also prominent figures. Mahatma Gandhi was among its esteemed patrons, as were Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bollywood legend Raj Kapoor. The establishment’s ambiance featured oak chairs imported from France and ceiling fans with wooden fittings crafted by a British carpenter, adding to its unique charm. In 2002, Chandravilas faced a significant setback when a fire during communal riots destroyed its original four-story structure. Demonstrating resilience, the Joshi family reopened the restaurant on a smaller scale in 2012, continuing to serve their signature dishes. Today, under the leadership of Pavan Joshi, the fifth generation of the founding family, Chandravilas remains a testament to Ahmedabad’s rich culinary heritage, delighting patrons with traditional offerings like the fafda-jalebi combo . { must try place in Ahmedabad, best breakfast in Ahmedabad , fafda Jalebi , Dhokla }
