Fiery Sky! 🔥 . . . 1️⃣ Toyokuni Shrine - better known as 'Hiroshima Five-storied Pagoda', was built in the 15th century and stands 27m high. It is has a mix of Chinese and Japanese designs. The upper section has gold-painted drawings, and the inner wall has brilliantly-coloured Buddhist paintings. Located to the left of the giant torii gate and atop a hill, the pagoda soars high into the sky. What I found to be truly remarkable was that the Five-storied Pagoda is absolutely stunning from any angle. Up close, from a distance, straight on, to the side, from beneath the trees - The pagoda is a wonderful piece of Buddhist architecture which should be admired from as many positions as possible! 2️⃣ Itsukushima Shrine O-torii, better known as Hiroshima's Great Torii gate, is one of Japan's most prominent icons. The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, the main hall and a noh-theatre stage, which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea. It stands at 16.6m, with a top crosspiece length of 24.2m, main pillars 9.9m around, and a gross weight of 60t. The wood has had a vermillion lacquer (Komyotan lacquer) applied, the main pillars are made from camphor, and the smaller supporting pillars are made from cedar. The complex is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and six of its buildings and possessions have been designated by the Japanese government as National Treasures. And YES, this is the same Hiroshima that you have read in your history books - the city where the world's first a-bomb was dropped.
