
Marbat Festival — Fast Facts • Only in Nagpur — 19th-century tradition by Tanhane Teli community. • Began during plague and social injustice to drive away evil forces. • Kaali Marbat – Evil from outside. • Peeli Marbat – Internal corruption. • Badgya – Effigy of wrongdoers or symbolic enemies. • Streets fill with dhol, taashe and dance as effigies parade. • Message: “End evil, begin with good.” • Symbol of unity, protest and hope — still celebrated every year. Marbat Procession Route Highlights Traditional Route: The procession traverses the historic lanes of Itwari and East Nagpur, covering approximately 6.5 to 10 km. Key Locations (Procession & Diversions): Pivli Marbat Chowk Old Motor Stand Nehru Statue (Nehru Putla Square) Teennal Chowk Shaheed Chowk Gandhi Statue Mahal Jhenda Chowk Gandhi Gate Jaganath Budhwari Badkas Chowk Agrasen Chowk Bhola Ganesh Chowk The Kali Marbat effigy is traditionally burned at Harihar Mandir, and the Pili Marbat at Naik Talao.
