Did you know this? 🌼 It’s called Dol because the word literally means “swing.” On Dol Jatra, idols of Radha and Krishna are placed on a beautifully decorated dol (swing) and gently rocked as devotees sing kirtans and offer abir. The festival falls on Dol Purnima, the full moon day of the month of Phalgun, which also marks the birth anniversary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the saint who spread Krishna bhakti across Bengal. In many Vaishnav homes and temples, colours aren’t thrown wildly, they are first offered respectfully at the feet of the deities. Traditionally, natural colours made from flowers like palash were used, symbolising the arrival of spring. In Santiniketan, the day blends into Basanta Utsav, inspired by Rabindranath Tagore, where students dress in yellow, sing Rabindra sangeet, and welcome the season with grace before the playful colours begin. So while the rest of India may call it Holi and celebrate with vibrant chaos, Bengal’s Dol begins with devotion, poetry, and a gentle swing. Swing first. Colours later. And somehow, that makes it feel a little more intimate, a little more intentional and beautifully ours. 💛 #basantautsab #bengaliholi #doljatra #dol #holifestival
