It’s called “rectangle” because you match your breathing to the four sides of a rectangle — two longer sides and two shorter sides. Here’s how you do rectangle breathing: 1. Inhale slowly through your nose while mentally tracing the short side of a rectangle (e.g., 4-8 seconds). 2. Hold your breath as you mentally trace the long side (e.g., 6 seconds). 3. Exhale slowly through your mouth while tracing the other short side (4-8 seconds). 4. Hold your breath again tracing the other long side (6 seconds). Simple timing example: • Inhale 4-8 seconds • Hold 6 seconds • Exhale 4-8 seconds • Hold 6 seconds Repeat for 3–5 minutes or as long as you like.
