Deep inside Kannur’s forests lies Akkare Kottiyoor, a legendary Shiva temple also known as ‘Dakshina Kasi’. According to ancient lore, this is the sacred site where Goddess Sati Devi immolated herself during the Daksha Yaga, and Lord Shiva’s wrath gave rise to this holy spot. What makes Akkare Kottiyoor truly special is its unique annual festival , for just 28 days each year, a temporary shrine is set up on the eastern bank of the Bavali river (Akkare means ‘other side’). Devotees cross the river barefoot to reach the shrine, symbolising surrender to nature and faith. The rituals here are performed amidst the forest, under open skies , a rare and divine experience that keeps ancient traditions alive. #KottiyoorTemple #AkkareKottiyoor #KannurDiaries #KeralaTemples #TempleTour #HiddenGemsKerala #DivineDestinations #SouthIndiaTemples #TravelKerala #ExploreKannur #SpiritualJourney #IncredibleIndia #Pilgrimage #KeralaTourism #MyTravelDiaries
